Claire House Children’s Hospice helps seriously and terminally ill children live life to the full by creating wonderful experiences and bringing back a sense of normality to family life.
I was commissioned to produce photographs for their new website and for PR purposes. This involved working closely with the children and their families and the Claire House volunteers and staff. The images showed the people, the care and compassion of the team and how much the children enjoy and benefit from the Claire House environment and experiences.
The project took place on quite a number of days over the course of a few months and by the time the project was complete, we had a great portfolio of images.
There were, of course, many challenges to overcome – not least of which was being able to move quickly between completely different lighting environments, from bright natural light, to subdued multi-coloured LED lit rooms.
This was all happening while trying to catch the children in a happy mood and not disturbing or distracting them away from their enjoyment or encroaching on their time and space. Different children responded to having their photograph taken in different ways – some clearly enjoyed being the centre of attention and others, well, less so! Part of the challenge was to decide whether or not it was appropriate to take photos if I thought I was too much of an intrusion, but playing peek-a-boo from behind the camera with the children was great fun for everyone and often broke the ice!
